Temples and Buddhism in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Wat Dom Nak – Pagoda & Temple

A visit to the small city of Siem Reap means a visit to a few of the beautiful temples. These temples are old, but not the same ones that Siem Reap is famous for.  The temples here are the ones in town and are where many of the local population of Siem Reap come to worship, live as monks, and also go to school. This is how religion in Siem Reap is. They are a few hundred years old, not 1,000 years old like the famous Angkor Ruins just outside of town.

Roaming around the temple grounds reminded me of a college campus, but many of the people were off in the distance.  One monk came up to me to greet me and ask where I was from. He was a young man who told me he was from a poor family, came to the temple to live and learn as a monk.  If a family is too poor to send their kids to school, they can enter their child into the temple school, and they live as a monk and they learn in the temple’s school. Once they are old enough and have completed their education, they either go out into the world or stay and live as monk in their adult years.

Also present here today are children that go to school here, but live at home with their parents. They are off in the distance in front of their class rooms.

Buddhists’ making a wish to the two women figures in the back. Once they donate flowers, they use a small pot and dip it in holy water and sprinkle a little at the base of the two figures, then they get a blessing. If their wish comes true, they will give back to the temple.
